There are two Input Types which you can place maximum character restrictions on. You can set the maximum length on ‘Single Line Text’ and ‘Multi Line Text’ input types. Select Single Line text if are requiring a small amount of characters from a user, i.e. a name or the first line of an address.

single line txt

Select 'Multi Line Text' if you are requiring a potentially larger amount of characters from a user, i.e. a comments box. You can restrict both in the same way.

multi line txt

To force a limit on the text users enter into the text box, enter a number into the 'Maximum Length (chars)' box, as shown below, this number is the maximum number of characters the user will be able to type into the text box:

You can also set Help Text to guide the user, so if they hover over the text-box they will see the amount of characters they need to enter to be sucessfull in submitting the form, see the example below:

help text box

When the form is created and a maximum character restriction has been placed on either the Single Line text box or the Multi Line text box, the number limit you have chosen will be visible underneath the text box itself. This will count down when characters are entered, until it reaches zero, this makes it clear to the user how many more characters they have left to use, see the example form below.

Example Form:

See the example form below of a Single Line text box and a Multi Line text box. The Single Line text box has a character restriction of 5 characters and the Multi Line text box has a restriction of 20 characters. The single-line text box has been set to mandatory and has help text set, the Multi Line text box is not mandatory and has no help text.
