Track 'Page not found' errors in Google Analytics

Last updated: 08 February 2010, 11:16

Sometimes, a visitor to your website may try to access a page or a document that does not exist. The visitor may simply make a mistake when typing the address, or he or she may follow an invalid link from an external website or search engine. When this happens, the visitor sees the Page not found screen on your website.

You can now use Google Analytics to track every instance of Page not found errors. You can use Analytics to help you work out how many times the page not found screen is being shown to your visitors, and the addresses that they are trying to access.

You can then work out where the visitors are coming from. This will let you update any external website with broken links, or will allow you to add Friendly URLs to your pages so that the old links start to work again.
