Generate a Google Maps API Key

If you are using the old Google Console:

  1. Go to https://code.google.com/apis/console.
  2. Log in with your Google Analytics username and password.
  3. You will probably need to create a project. This is straightforward and contains only a few steps.
  4. Once created you'll be on the overview screen. Click on 'Services' on the left after which you'll be presented with all of Google's services.
  5. A third of the way down the page is 'Google Maps API v3'. Flick the switch to 'ON'. This service is now active.
  6. Go to the 'API Access' page from the left, which lists all of the API infodata. In the section labelled 'Simple API Access' is the API key we need.

If you are using the new Google Cloud Console:

  1. Go to https://code.google.com/apis/console.
  2. Log in with your Google Analytics username and password.
  3. You will probably need to create a project. This is straightforward and contains only a few steps.
  4. Once created you'll be on the overview screen. Click on 'APIs and Auth' on the left after which you'll be presented with all of Google's services.
  5. Flick the switch for 'Google Maps API v3' to 'ON'. This service is now active.
  6. Click Registered apps at the left hand side, then click the 'Register App' button. Choose the 'web' option and click Register. The key within the Browser Key section is the API key that we need.
